My classroom is built around learning and developing skills. The goal for my students is that they would leave their history courses equipped with the tools they need to not only succeed in other classes, but to excel beyond the world of academia.
With this in mind, every course is framed around the effective understanding and use of content, as well as what I call the 6 Major Historical Skills - doing research, asking questions, making arguments, seeing from different perspectives, making connections and telling stories. Each skill has one (or many) specific assignments associated with it, teaching students the whats, hows and whys of each skill, and we will be practicing all 6 throughout the year.
